IELTS in Uzbekistan temporarily shifts to computer-only format after suspected answer leaks in paper-based tests

The administration of paper-based IELTS exams in Uzbekistan has been temporarily halted due to instances of test answers being leaked online. Candidates registered for the paper-based test can switch to the computer-based format or receive a full refund of their exam fees.

Starting July 11, the paper-based format for the IELTS, an international English proficiency certification, will no longer be offered in Uzbekistan. Candidates will now take the test exclusively on computers. This decision follows reports of paper-based test answers being circulated on the internet.

On July 8, IDP (Edu-Action Centre), an organization administering IELTS in Uzbekistan, announced on its Telegram page that registration for paper-based IELTS tests would be temporarily suspended. The organization cited operational reasons for the decision. According to Gazeta, the IELTS system in Uzbekistan has yet to reach a definitive conclusion regarding the future of paper-based testing.

Candidates registered for the paper-based IELTS can either transfer to the computer-based format (IELTS on Computer) at no additional cost or request a full refund of their exam fees.

Notes for candidates registered with IDP (Edu-Action Centre):

  • To transfer to the computer-based test, candidates should register for the computer format via @idpregbot/exams.uz and then message @idp004 on Telegram, stating, “I want to transfer.”
  • For a refund, candidates must complete a refund application through @idponline_bot on Telegram, send it to @idp004, and write, “I want a refund.”
  • In both cases, a photo of a passport or ID card is required. The contact number is +998712300103.

Notes for candidates registered with British Council:

  • Candidates registered for the paper-based test must notify info@britishcouncil.uz of their decision by July 31.

IELTS computer-based testing in Uzbekistan:

The Reading, Writing, and Listening sections of the IELTS will be conducted on computers, while the Speaking section will remain a traditional face-to-face interview with an examiner.

The test format, question types, time allocated for each section, and content remain unchanged. Results for the computer-based IELTS are available within 1 to 5 working days, compared to 13 days for the paper-based test.

In Uzbekistan, the computer-based IELTS can be taken through IDP in 4 cities (exam fee: $190) or through British Council in 12 cities (exam fee: 2,639,000 UZS).
